Street pictures when the opportunity arises
I’ve been working a lot of hours, and it’s keeping me from my street photography, but I’m grateful to still be in a job and even more so as I work in the Aviation sector. Today was my first day off in eleven days and as you can imagine, I was pretty tired and all I wanted to do was take it easy and watch TV. I did some catching up on programs I’ve been watching, and then I moved on to some picture editing which I’ve been falling behind on, I really like being in the edit, I know some people hate it, but I really look forward to it and seeing my work finished gives me a feeling of accomplishment. Anyway, I had to get a few things from the town where I live and as it was my day off it was the only time I could do it, as always I take my camera with me, because the moment you leave it behind there will be an opportunity and you’ll miss it. Because of the lock down I can’t just go into the city which is ten miles away without having a good reason to be there, and making street photos isn’t a good enough reason during a lock down, so taking my camera with me when I do local errands is my only option for street photography at the moment.
To be honest I didn’t think there would be much going on in the town, the last time I think I saw about ten people, I wasn’t holding my breath that I’d get to make any pictures this time either.
I guess in total I was in town for forty five minutes, normally when I go into the city I would spend hours walking around, stopping for lunch and drinking coffee and people watching, so this was a very short session by my standards. I’m really surprised by the pictures I made, they are no masterpieces by any means, but it was one of those days when I seemed to be in the right position to see someone fit their mask, or take a drag on a cigarette. Other times I’ve spent hours chasing a picture that never seemed to materialize, when I would constantly miss a shot. I think when you’re not expecting much that’s when it happens, but it doesn’t work going out every time expecting nothing to happen, if I had that mindset I wouldn’t leave the house, who would?
Well I made four images I’m quite happy with, I know it doesn’t always go that way, I’ve spent a lot longer and got nothing worth uploading to the internet let alone print, not that I don’t look forward to being out with my camera, but spending such little time out with it these days makes me realise you’ve got to make the most of every opportunity you get.
